Course Description

This course is designed for the entry-intermediate level sea-kayaker. Safety issues, equipment design and use, basic paddle techniques on flat water, wet release and self and assisted rescues will be covered. This course is to prepare students for paddling in the ocean environment at a class 1-2 level. It is also a pre-requisite for Sea Kayak 2.

Course Objective

On completion of Sea kayak 1, students should be able to understand the fundamentals of sea kayaking as well as demonstrate some of the basic techniques.

Schedule/Organisation

Students will meet at 9:45am by the kayak racks down by the lake to fill out all the necessary documents. 10:00am to 12:00noon will be spent in and around the lake practising basic paddling techniques. If time allows we will hit the ocean. Lunch will be between 12:00pm and 1:00pm. The remainder of the day between 1:00pm and 4:00pm will be spent on/in the ocean practising self and assisted rescues.

EQUIPMENT CHECK LIST

Students are responsible for their own personal gear and food for Sea kayak 1,2 and 3. Hypothermia is always a concern in the water environment even in summer. Food, water and dry clothes will dramatically reduce the chances of hypothermia. Fleece, polypro, and other synthetic fibres are recommended over cotton.

  1. Old running shoes, neoprene booties or sandals
  2. Bathing suit and top (which will get wet)
  3. Full change of clothes stored in a dry bag, stuff sac or small back pack
